It can be a lot easier if you plan your self build using computer software designed for the task. i have found Excel to be one of the best pieces of software, as you can plug in different templates which are specifically made to do the job.

I know a lot of people do house estimating by hand, but there are so many variables to do with building a house like the kitchen, the floors the roof, the garden etc. One thing could change and then you have to recalculate the whole thing. With having a computerised version of a house estimator it makes it a lot more easy.
