How To Build a Log Cabin Frame

Framing–the Backbone of your Log Cabin

Framing is the structural skeleton of your house. The drawing at
the top indicates the important framing members of any of the
cottages. The most important elements are the sill, header,
joists, girders, sole, flooring, studs, plate, and rafters.
Let’s take a look at these parts.

Except in the case of concrete slab construction, the sill is
the first wood member to rest on the foundations and will be the
first wood member you will put down. The sill is usually a
2-by-4-inch piece. In pier construction you will note that I
have occasionally used a 2-by-6-inch member. This is because the
header is made up of two pieces 2 inches thick, instead of one,
as shown in the illustration.

Sills form a bearing surface for the undersides of joists. They
should be bolted to the slab or wall foundations. If you are
using pier foundations, it is important that you first put down
the sill around the building, then spike the inner header to the
sill from the underside. After this is done, lay out the joists
and securely spike the inner header to them. Continue reading →

Log Cabin Fever

Homesteaders settling in the territories of the American West traditionally built log cabins; durable, rainproof, and inexpensive. Today, eco-friendly and rustically charming, log cabins with their distinctive handcrafted appearance seem to be making a comeback, with luxurious features such as whirlpools, skylight windows and heated patios.

Swedish colonists built the first log cabins in North America at the beginning of the 18th century. The design of the log cabins was influenced by typical North European farm-houses until the introduction of the Homestead Act. According to which, new colonists had to build their homes of a specific size with at least one window. These old log cabins had just one room, a spacious porch, and an elevated area for sleeping.

Log Stain - Tips And Tricks On How To Get The Most Out Of Your Log Home Stain

First off, picking the right stain for your home is an extremely important step. Some folks may choose a less reputable stain since it is in the color that they desire, but you may find that this investment doesn’t pay off. Paying top dollar for your stain should be paramount and different stains work differently depending on the climate and region you are in. Make sure you do the proper homework when it comes to your log stain choice.

The second tip is to make sure you do all the proper preparation work for your log home. If your home is new, make sure you rent a pressure washer and clean your home from top to bottom. If your cabin is a bit on the old side, you might need to sand down the old logs so that they are properly porous enough to absorb the new stain. Taking a few extra days to prep your cabin right can really make a difference over the long haul.

Log Cabin House

The great thing about a log cabin house is that it is made out of wood. Wood is natural and sucks co2 out of the air and then stores it within the wood. It only gets released when burnt, so how do we reduce co2, lets build more log cabins.

Wood is a great product, very durable and what else would you build a log cabin house out of?

When I get my log cabin I will make sure it has a strong, rock foundation.

A Log Cabin is for Writing

I have a fondness for sheds, and it seems that a shed is really just a mini log cabin. Sure, a log cabin is meant to be a place to live, but I bet more than a few sheds have been used as a domicile.

Log cabin picture

The reason I like a good shed is that you remove yourself into your own world. Few people will come out the house to bug you about what they saw the crows picking off the road as they drove in to refill their Dr Pepper supplies.

But a log cabin is probably a bit too big and feels a bit too remote to have the came cosy, foetal warmth. So whilst a lot of writing gets done in a log cabin - what else can you do in a log cabin except write - you can also use the shed as the perfect place to write.

I have written many a word in sheds, I have not one of my own, but as soon as I get a bit of land, up goes the shed. It will be my log cabin to write in
