How to build a brick wall
Whether you want to build a small wall or a wall around your patio, the principle is the same.
You will need
- Sand
- Water
- Bucket
- Cement
- Lime or Plasticiser
- Bricks
Bricks
Over 2m tall and you will need to check your councils regulations.
First thing to get right is your footings, these are what your brick wall will be built on. You need to learn how to lay foundations before you proceed.
Second, you need to buy your bricks. You can find bricks for sale. The types of bricks you buy will be dependent on the type of wall you are building. Roughly we are talking about 65 bricks per sq metre. If you are building your wall over 75cm you should be building a double thickness wall, which means double the bricks.
Third, you need to mix your mortar, this is what is going to hold your bricks together, you need to learn how to mix mortar. Use any mortar mix within two hours.
Fourth, always start at the ends of the wall and work in. Take two bricks and wrap a piece of string around them, laying them at either end of the wall making a straight piece of string. This will be your guide as you lay your bricks. It is essential that you lay your bricks in a straight line.
Fifth Take a load of mortar onto your trowel and lay the first bricks. Remove excess mortar as you go along, you can tap the bricks into position as you go along. Make sure the bricks are laid offset to one another. This is what gives the wall strength.

Looks like house builders are making them smaller, according to housingcrisis.com The same story is reported over at RIS media
As someone who has seen the average American house, I’m always surprised they don’t try to make a little more money by renting it out as an aircraft hanger. I know Americans like stuff big, but what’s with this huge houses that could hold a go kart track inside them. It’s certainly not tasteful.
